What Are Biomass Wood Pellets?
Biomass wood pellets are solid fuels produced from sawdust, wood chips, wood-processing residues or other lignocellulosic biomass. The raw materials are dried, ground into small particles and then compressed under high pressure into uniformly sized cylindrical pellets.
Through the densification process, wood pellets have a higher bulk density than loose wood materials make them easier to transport, store and use in automated combustion systems.

Applications of Wood Pellets
Wood pellets are mainly used as biomass fuel in
- Industrial boilers
- Biomass power plants
- Residential and commercial heating systems
- Drying systems in the wood, food, textile and agricultural industries
- Steam generation plants for industrial processes
- Certain coal co-firing systems to reduce the use of fossil fuels
In addition to domestic consumption, wood pellets are also an important export product to countries with strong demand for biomass energy.
How Are Wood Pellets Produced?
The wood pellet production process generally includes the following main steps
- Raw material preparation Sawdust, wood shavings, wood chips and other wood-processing residues are collected and prepared.
- Removal of impurities Stones, metals and other unsuitable materials are screened out.
- Grinding The raw material is ground into small and relatively uniform particles.
- Drying Moisture content is reduced to a level suitable for pelletizing.
- Pelletizing The material passes through a pellet mill under high pressure and temperature. Natural lignin in the wood softens and helps bind the particles together.
- Cooling Freshly produced pellets are hot and relatively soft so they must be cooled to increase hardness and mechanical strength.
- Screening and packaging Dust and broken pellets are removed before the finished product is packed in bags, jumbo bags or stored in silos depending on the intended use.
Wood pellet quality depends significantly on the type of raw material, moisture content, particle size, pelletizing temperature and storage conditions.
Key Benefits of Wood Pellets
Efficient transportation and storage
Wood pellets have a uniform size and higher bulk density than loose sawdust or wood chips help reduce storage space and improve transportation efficiency.
Suitable for automated combustion systems
Their relatively uniform size makes wood pellets suitable for automatic fuel-feeding systems used in boilers and heating equipment.
Utilization of wood-processing residues
Sawdust, wood shavings and various wood-processing by-products can be converted into valuable fuel instead of being discarded.
Reduced dependence on fossil fuels
Wood pellets can partially replace coal, oil or gas in certain industrial heating applications.
Generally low ash content
When produced from clean wood without excessive bark, soil or other impurities, wood pellets typically generate less ash than many untreated biomass fuels.
Renewable energy source
When the wood raw material comes from sustainably managed sources that wood pellets can help reduce dependence on non-renewable energy sources.
