What is Pentaerythritol Ester of Gum Rosin?
Pentaerythritol-modified rosin commonly known as Pentaerythritol Ester of Rosin or Pentaerythritol Rosin Ester is a resin produced by esterifying rosin with pentaerythritol.
Pentaerythritol is a polyol containing four hydroxyl (-OH) groups. When it reacts with the resin acids present in rosin, it forms esters with larger and more stable molecular structures than the original rosin.
The purpose of this modification is to reduce the acidity of rosin while improving thermal resistance, stability, adhesion and compatibility with polymers.

Properties of Pentaerythritol Ester of Gum Rosin
| Property | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Adhesion | Good, particularly suitable for adhesive systems requiring high tack |
| Softening point | Generally higher than that of glycerol ester and unmodified rosin |
| Thermal resistance | Better than unesterified rosin |
| Acid value | Significantly lower than that of unmodified rosin |
| Oxidative stability | Improved, especially in hydrogenated or disproportionated rosin grades |
| Compatibility | Compatible with various rubbers and polymers such as EVA, SIS, SBS, NR, and certain polyolefins |
| Tackifying ability | Good, making it widely used as a tackifier |
| Color | Ranges from light yellow to amber depending on the raw materials and manufacturing process |
| Odor | Generally milder than unmodified rosin, depending on the product grade |
| Solubility | Soluble in many organic solvents; insoluble in water |
Compared with Glycerol Rosin Ester, Pentaerythritol Rosin Ester generally has a higher softening point and better heat resistance make it more suitable for hot-melt adhesive formulations operating at elevated temperatures.
Applications of Pentaerythritol Ester of Gum Rosin
Its most important application is as a tackifying resin in the adhesive industry.
- Hot Melt Adhesives Used with EVA, SIS, SBS and other base polymers to increase tack and adhesion and to adjust the softening temperature.
- Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives Used in adhesive tapes, labels, decals and protective films.
- Packaging Adhesives Used for carton sealing, box bonding, bookbinding and food packaging when the resin grade complies with the relevant standards.
- Footwear Adhesives Used in certain rubber-based and hot-melt adhesive formulations.
- Rubber Compounds Used as a tackifier or property-modifying agent in certain rubber formulations.
- Paints and Coatings Certain rosin ester grades are used to improve adhesion, gloss and film-forming properties.
- Printing Inks May be used in certain ink systems as a binder or as a modifier for adhesion and gloss.
- Waxes and Coating Materials Used to adjust hardness, adhesion and softening temperature.
